St Bakhita Kiburia

St Bakhita Kiburia Girl’s secondary school was started in 1967 by the Catholic Church under the Catholic Diocese of Nyeri then. The school was established as a Mission school to offer hope to girls who would otherwise have been denied an opportunity to continue with their education and fulfill their aspirations for a productive and better life. At the time, these were mainly the girls who were sponsored by the church since their parents could not afford to pay school fees in government schools. The second group was of girls who did not qualify for admission in to the few government schools but were able enough to benefit from secondary education. The first head teacher was Sr Alfonsa and since then the school has had a total of ten head teachers.

Like all mission schools in Kenya Kiburia went through change of status from Mission, to Harambee, to Government Aided District School, to a Provincial Public Girls Boarding School, County Girls Secondary School and is currently an extra county girl’s school.
